Choosing A Law School (cont.)

2. Do you want to specialize in a specific area of law? If so, then choose a law school that offers either an LLM program in that specialty or a certification program for law students. These schools will probably have a greater wealth of elective courses in your area of interest. The University of Akron, for instance, offers an LLM in Intellectual Property, Tax, or Public Administration.  It also offers a certification program in Intellectual Property and in Litigation

3. How does the law school rank in terms of bar passage rates? As a law student, your final goal is passing the bar exam. One of the reasons I chose the University of Akron was because it consistently ranked either first or second in bar passage in the state of Ohio. With top ranks each year, I figured they must be doing something right. So find out how the law school compares to other law schools. Does it consistently come in last in the state? A law school's bar passage rate is not only a function of its admissions selectivity. It also has a great deal to do with how well it prepares you for this all-important exam. Don't be afraid to ask the tough questions!
