So You Want To Be A Lawyer:
Choosing A Law School

A law school's prestige should not be the deciding factor in your choice of law schools. To make an informed choice, you should consider preparing a tentative wish list of your projected career goals for three (3) to four (4) years after graduation. Here are a few questions I asked of myself when I made the decision to enroll in a law school.

1. Where do you want to practice? If a national market is part of your career goals, then you should seriously consider a law school with a national reputation. On the other hand, if you have no desire to move out of state or even away from your current city, then it makes more sense to choose a law school in your city or state.

Your choice of location may also be affected by other considerations, such as the proximity of family and friends. As a 1L, you will certainly face new challenges that may seem daunting. Family and friends can ease the strain of your first year and help you tackle these challenges.

Location is especially important if you want to become a solo practitioner. If this is the direction you want you take, then consider going to law school in the city or state in which you have the strongest community ties.
